What is DAT file in DCIM/000APPLE folder on your iPod?
iPod folder DCIM/000APPLE serves for storing photo and video named IMG_XXXX.jpg and IMG_XXXX.mp4 respectively. Default iPod app creates an IMG_XXXX.DAT file for each photo or video file. DAT file contains a number of smaller copies of a photo or of the first frame of the video in a variety of sizes. Those copies are used to enable quick preview. Unlike ITHMB files, DAT files have the definite signature - the string doPIFmaC.
